A new proposal would allow people born in New York City to choose a third gender category on their birth certificate.
City Council Speaker Corey Johnson will introduce the legislation this week, allowing those who do not identify as male or female to file a change to the category, and choose “X” on their certificate.
The proposal will also allow parents to choose “X” for their newborns.
The board of health will consider the proposal at a meeting scheduled for Tuesday.
Public hearings on the legislation are expected next month, with a vote happening as early as September.
