New jobless claims filed last week rose by 25,000 to 471,000, the government reported moments ago, defying predictions that they would drop. It’s the largest rise in three months.
The four-week moving average of new jobless claims, which smooths out week-to-week volatility, rose 3,000 to 453,500.
The official U.S. unemployment rate in April was 9.9 percent, up from 9.7 percent in March. But 290,000 new jobs were added to payrolls, encouraging those who believe a recovery is underway.

(CNSNews.com) – In a “candid and constructive” human rights dialogue with officials from the People’s Republic of China last week, Obama administration officials brought up Arizona’s new immigration-enforcement law, telling the Chinese Communists it was an example of a “troubling trend” in the United States and an indication of “discrimination or potential discrimination” in American society. (No one in his administration has read the law – Andrew?)
Ironically, the State Department’s most recent report on human rights in China indicates that the government there restricts the internal travel of its own citizens.

Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano admits she hasn’t read the Arizona immigration law, but passed judgment on it anyway. “That’s not the kind of law I would have signed,” she declared. “I believe it’s a bad law enforcement law. I believe it mandates and requires local enforcement and puts them in a position many do not want to be placed in,” Napolitano said. “When I was dealing with laws of that ilk, most of the law enforcement agencies in Arizona at that time were opposed to such legislation,” she claimed.

Mar. 8–Authorities are pushing to regulate what they say is a common method drug cartels use to move money across the border: stored-value cards.
A loophole in federal law lets people take the cards — which look like debit or credit cards — across the border freely.
The cards aren’t classified under federal law as a “monetary instrument,” which means holders don’t have to declare them. By contrast, anyone carrying more than $10,000 in cash across the border must declare it to customs officers.
Unlimited amounts of money can be put into accounts linked to the cards, making them attractive to smugglers looking to avoid increased scrutiny at ports of entry, authorities say.
Federal officials have no way of knowing how much money travels in and out of the United States on the cards because they have no way to track them. But Arizona Attorney General Terry Goddard believes it’s millions, based on conversations with law-enforcement officials.

A Republican congressman who is running for retiring Kansas Senator Sam Brownback’s seat says the radical policies of President Obama and the Democratic-controlled Congress have been a wake-up call for the American people, who appear ready to elect Republicans this fall.
The results of a recent Wall Street Journal/NBC News poll do not bode well for Democrats this fall. It finds that the so-called “independent” voters credited with helping the Democrats take control of Congress in 2006 have switched their allegiance to the GOP.
The survey shows 38 percent of self-described independents said they would vote for Republicans in November, compared to 30 percent who are for Democrats. Prior to the 2006 mid-terms, the same poll found that 40 percent of independents favored Democrats and 24 percent supported Republicans. You may rea he rest of the article at
