Democrats are bracing for the loss of a House seat Saturday in President Obama’s birthplace of Hawaii, where a special election in a heavily Democratic district has inflamed tensions within the party.
Republican Charles Djou has been leading in recent public polls in the winner-takes-all contest — largely as a result of a feud between two Democratic candidates that has splintered their party’s base. A Djou victory would break the Democrats’ long winning streak of special elections and hand the Republican Party a symbolic victory in its bid to regain control of Congress. There were no party primaries to replace Neil Abercrombie, a 10-term Democratic congressman who resigned to run for governor, so Saturday’s election features 14 candidates. Whoever gets the most votes wins.

WEST POINT, N.Y. — President Obama on Saturday pledged to shape a new “international order” as part of a national security strategy that emphasizes his belief in global institutions and America’s role in promoting democratic values around the world.
Speaking to the graduating class at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point — the ninth wartime commencement in a row, he said — the commander in chief who is leading two foreign wars expressed his faith in cooperation and partnerships to confront the economic, military and environmental challenges of the future.
“The international order we seek is one that can resolve the challenges of our times,'” he said in prepared remarks. “Countering violent extremism and insurgency; stopping the spread of nuclear weapons and securing nuclear materials; combating a changing climate and sustaining global growth; helping countries feed themselves and care for their sick; preventing conflict and healing its wounds.”

It is perfectly obvious that Iran’s latest uranium maneuver, brokered by Brazil and Turkey, is a ruse. Iran retains more than enough enriched uranium to make a bomb. And it continues enriching at an accelerated pace and to a greater purity (20 percent). Which is why the French foreign ministry immediately declared that the trumpeted temporary shipping of some Iranian uranium to Turkey will do nothing to halt Iran’s nuclear program.
It will, however, make meaningful sanctions more difficult. America’s proposed Security Council resolution is already laughably weak — no blacklisting of Iran’s central bank, no sanctions against Iran’s oil and gas industry, no nonconsensual inspections on the high seas. Yet Turkey and Brazil — both current members of the Security Council — are so opposed to sanctions that they will not even discuss the resolution. And China will now have a new excuse to weaken it further.

A new report from Numbers USA, which advocates for limits on immigration into the United States, says each American paid $330 last year to provide government services for illegal aliens.
Numbers USA staffer Chad MacDonald said if an amnesty plan becomes law, allowing illegals coast-to-coast to suddenly establish citizenship, their retirement program will set U.S. taxpayers back an estimated $2.6 trillion.
In an interview with WND, MacDonald addressed a long list of issues, including the costs of illegal immigration.
“Last year, every American on the average paid $330 to provide government services for low-education illegal-immigrant households,” he said. “If amnesty legislation would be passed by Congress, like the proposal from 2007, American taxpayers would have to pay $2.6 trillion in retirement costs to those amnestied illegal aliens.”
MacDonald and a team of volunteers have been following the Tea Party Express, an organization that has been traveling the country staging rallies to protest the high costs of government and advocate for more individual rights and responsibilities. Flyers by the thousands have been given out, he said.

In what is developing into a standoff between states and the federal government that could be bigger than gun control or even health care, 17 states have launched versions of Arizona’s immigration law, even as federal officials say they may not bother to process illegal aliens caught by the states.
William Gheen, president of Americans for Legal Immigration PAC, which has been trying to get officials to address the open southern border for years, warned the consequences could be dire.
“Over the last couple days, Obama and the chief of ICE have refused to honor their oaths of office,” he said. “Their constitutional requirement is to enforce existing laws.
“They’ve told the American public to go eat cake,” he said.
Tell Washington what you think about immigration by sending every member of the Senate “The No Amnesty Pledge.”
His organization is assembling the list of state efforts to emulate the Arizona law, which makes it illegal under state as well as federal law to be in the state without documentation.

“No more bailouts, no more greed, how many profits do you need?”
That’s been a signature chant of community organizers and Big Labor thugs who have stormed bank offices and financial executives’ private homes decrying corporate welfare over the past several months. But now that the federal government and a coalition of big banking interests are poised to bail out a crony Chicago bank with longtime ties to the Obama administration, Saul Alinsky’s avenging angels are nowhere to be found.
ShoreBank is a Windy City investment bank with all the right (or, rather, left) ties. Its stated progressive mission isn’t merely to make good lending decisions, but to engage in Barack Obama-esque social engineering to “create economic equity and a healthy environment.” The ShoreBank corporate slogan: “Let’s change the world.”
The company website features a video of Obama in Kenya championing ShoreBank microlending projects overseas. ShoreBank has also touted itself as a “green” bank from its founding days — promoting dubious carbon credit programs, subjecting new borrowers to eco-litmus tests (“we look at how you use water, how you recover water and clean it, how you use energy, if you produce clean energy, how you manage CO2, whether you are offsetting CO2 that your product produces, if you are using sustainably produced materials”) and encouraging customers to participate in “EcoDeposits” to “directly support the green agenda.”

By Mike Lillis 5/20/10 10:33 AM So says the office of Sen. Max Baucus (D-Mont.), who heads the Senate Finance Committee.
The bill would extend the filing deadline for the existing tiers of emergency unemployment benefits — not to be confused with the creation of additional tiers — through the end of 2010. Under current law, that deadline will arrive at the end of May, threatening to lock hundreds of thousands of jobless Americans into their current tier of benefits without the option of reaching the next level.
The Baucus bill — which will be released jointly by the House Ways and Means Committee — also includes emergency funding to extend COBRA benefits, to prevent Medicare doctors from being hit with a huge pay cut June 1, and to extend a tax credit encouraging mining companies to promote worker safety.
Additionally, the bill would “increase or eliminate” the cap on the Oil Spill Liability Trust fund, which is currently $1 billion.
